The Keys of Law and Chaos

The keys needed to open the door to the chamber of the soul gem. They can be found on the planes of Hell, Celestia, Limbo and Pandemonium. Two keys, one of law and one of chaos are needed. The two Keys of Chaos are kept through trial on the planes of Limbo and Pandemonium. They Keys of Law are in the Keeping of Tiamat and Bahamut.

The gods made the keys to lock away the soul gem so it could never be used to feed the Codex to greater power, as Galap-Dreidel planned.

Very few mortals know of the plan of Galap-Dreidel, master of the Ghost Tower of Inverness. He had become powerful using the soul gem and traveling the planes he imprisoned many souls and could use their souls for magical power. He went to the Isles of Woe when they reappeared and is one of very few people who ever left alive. Returning with the Codex of Infinite Planes he was corrupted by the book and gathered souls to feed it.

He believes he has gathered enough souls to accomplish the goal of the mad tome…ascension to godhood. The absorption of the lost sisters of the gnomes was not enough to ascend…but it did give the Codex nearly godlike powers. In fact, the one failure of its long existence is that the sister lie in stasis on the Isles of Woe; their godlike essence still locked within them. It knows with enough souls it can crack them open and feed and become a god.

Given the insane nature of the Codex and the other secrets of its creation…the gods want to stop the ascension of the Codex at all costs. But they foresaw a time when Asmodeus could get both codex and gem and conquer all reality. So they left a means for others to get the items to stop both that and the ultimate plans of the Codex. This is why they allowed the Isles of Woe to resurface from time to time…so the Codex could be destroyed.
